No.160.
Addressed to Secretary of State for the Colonies
No. 160 of the 13th September reposted to Peking Canton and
Shanghai for Mr. Howe's mission. Request permission to
proceed to Canton September 17th on strictly informal vis it
to Consul General for two nights in order to pay informal
call on
Chiang-Kai-Shek in response to verbal invitation
conveyed to me through his wife during recent visit here.
Recent intention of the Generalissimp was to visit
Hong Kong informally but this has now been prevented by serious
indisposition of Madame. Object of visit will be to mako
acquaintance with the Generalissimo and his now régime in
Canton with a view to future co-operation but no concrete
proposals are likely to be put forward for consideration
at this juncture. Consul General agrees strongly with me
that opportunity of arranging personal contact y invitation
should not be lost and has informed Embassy in this sense.
Much regret shortness of notice which is due to illness of
Madame and its effect on movements and plans of Generalissimo.
